What this price means
NADAC is what pharmacies pay, not what you pay. The National Average Drug Acquisition Cost is the average price that U.S. retail pharmacies pay to buy a drug from wholesalers or manufacturers. CMS builds it from a monthly survey of pharmacy invoices and publishes it every week.
Your price at the counter is different: pharmacies add a dispensing fee and their margin, and if you use insurance, your copay or coinsurance is set by your plan. For generics, the cash price is often several times NADAC. For brand-name drugs it is usually close to or above NADAC.
Use NADAC as a fair-price reference: if a cash price is many times higher than the pharmacy's own cost, it is worth comparing elsewhere.

Questions & answers
What is NADAC?
NADAC (National Average Drug Acquisition Cost) is the average price U.S. retail pharmacies pay to buy a drug, based on a monthly survey of pharmacy invoices run for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS publishes it weekly. Many state Medicaid programs use it to pay pharmacies.
Is this what I will pay at the pharmacy?
No. NADAC is the pharmacy's own purchase cost. Your price adds a dispensing fee and the pharmacy's margin, or is set by your insurance plan as a copay. Use it as a reference to judge whether a cash price is reasonable.
Why is the brand so much more expensive than the generic?
Brand-name drugs are sold by one company, often under patent. Once generics are approved, several manufacturers compete and prices usually drop sharply. On each drug page you can see the pharmacy cost of the generic next to the brand when both are listed in NADAC.
How often are the prices updated?
Weekly. CMS publishes a new NADAC file each week; this page refreshes automatically. Current data: week of Oct 28, 2026.
Which drugs are included?
600 strengths and forms of the drugs with the most Medicare Part D claims, as listed by CMS. Over-the-counter products are not included.
